Most Ghanaian musicians die as paupers. Those who are fortunate to be alive, GhanaGist.Com can say on authority live in abject poverty because of failed policies over the years.
The current Executives of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) led by its President, Obour have launched a Welfare Fund for Ageing Musicians (AMWeF) for ageing musicians in the country.
The objective of the AMWeF is to “to register and organize members of MUSIGA 60years and above, for a common purpose with regards to their welfare; to register and establish a database of musicians who have become incapacitated during their musical lives and; to register all targeted beneficiaries with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS)”.
Other objectives, he said, include: “to assist musicians financially or in kind during severe illness or death and to compile their musical works and market them to support the artistes and the Fund”.
