Tigo Internship Programme launched to equip undergraduates for the job market

Ghana’s digital lifestyle telecom brand, Tigo, has launched its undergraduate internship programme with the first batch of 30 students taking up various positions within the organization; namely the Technology, Marketing, Customer Operations, Sales and Tigo Business departments.

The Tigo Internship Programme (TIP), spans over a three-month period and aims to expose students to the operations within the telecommunication industry, and offer them the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience for their professional fields in their desired career paths.

Over 300 students applied to take part in the programme however the number was pruned down to 30 after the applicants were taken through a rigorous selection process which included the submission of a video resume and a face to face interview with a panel.

At the induction ceremony, the Director of Human Resource at Tigo, Elizabeth Arhin, explained that the initiative was born out of the company’s belief in empowering young people with opportunities to harness their skills and learn new practical abilities. This year, the company decided to open up the programme to more students.

“The initiative is specially designed to give students the opportunity to explore the world of work and also broaden their scope beyond what they are taught in the classroom. The programme is well structured and based on student’s interests.” she further explained.

She advised the interns to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from experienced hands in the industry and to explore their creativity.

One of the newly inducted interns serving at the Marketing Department, Ami Narkuor Nartey, shared her expectations for the programme.

“I believe as students you have to step out from your comfort zone, so I chose to do internship because I wanted to do something new and acquire new skills and experience. As a second year student from the University of Ghana, I decided on Tigo because their products are youth friendly and affordable. I am here to improve on my communication skills and connect with people from all walks of life. I am optimistic my stay here will be worthwhile,” she said.
