THE ALEWA POETRY SHOW, last seen was August 2013 at the Mensvic Grand Hotel, it did not show its face in 2014 as it’s known to be an annual poetry event that has elevated most prominent poets today: but despite the gloom that it painted on the faces of patrons last year, Alewa is back and three times loaded than the ones you’ve experienced.
The usual one day show has been left in the past life as this reincarnation celebrates poetry/spoken word in three (3) days.
The FIRST day, 28th August, presents the first and the biggest poetry bout in Ghana. It is dubbed the “POETRY ARENA”, a poetry bout like in boxing. It will feature poets in the red and blue corners who will box with words, this event promises to give the real meaning to “punchlines”.
Two (2) other curtain raiser bouts will be arranged per submission and will be warming up for the final poetry fight between Rhymesonny and Mutombo da poet, who will lead the red and blue corners respectively and like all bouts, there will be judges who will score this match. We are reliably informed that the delivery of the judgment might perhaps be the highlight of the night; you don’t want to miss this.
Rhymesonny is currently the undisputed king of rhymes, a real gem in the field of words particularly rhyme, he is the epitome of rhyming’ most advanced rhymes, he is skillful and stylish.
Mutombo da poet is arguably the one of the best and most popular spoken word artiste in Ghana, he has a spoken word album to his credit and working on his second, The only poet to be signed on to a recognized record label ‘Pidgin Music’. He has got energy and a delight to watch on stage. Both of them have tasted great successes in their spoken word careers and have a quite an impressive repertoire.
The second day heralds the female voices in Ghanaian poetry and spoken word industry and its dubbed, “POETential Women”, the night explores the female point of view on various subjects spanning from love, life, womanhood, religion, politics to all that lies in the ink of the poetess.
People Of Equal Thoughts & Spirit believe strongly in the potential of our women and want to create an exclusive platform that seeks to encourage social activism and empower female poets to use their talents in fighting for the cause of the woman. Poetry is important, talent is essential, any woman who is passionate about poetry is a ‘POETential Woman.
The final show that climaxes this year’s ALEWA will bridge the gap between music and poetry as It promises to bring musicians who employs the use of literary devices in their works and double as poets to stage along with the well-known Poets.
This final show down puts up the shutters on this year’s ALEWA as powered by Poeple Of Equal Thoughts and Spirits (POETS) and Global Arts and Development Center (GADEC) with support from the Graft Foundation and Yfm Ghana.
