Rachel Yankey presents top award to Athletics Federations President

British-born Ghanaian, Rachel Yankey, has presented the most prestigious Statue of Arthur Wharton to the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Lamine Diack in front of over 80, 000 people at the Olympic Park Stadium.

Arthur Wharton, who was originally from Ghana, became the first black professional footballer and held the record for 100 yards dash. The statue, which had been previously presented to FIFA, UEFA and the FA to commemorate his footballing achievements, this was the first time the presentation highlighted his athletic achievements and to make it even more special, this was presented at the Olympic Park Stadium exactly a year after the London 2012 games.

Rachel Yankey, MBE, is the most capped England Women’s Player in history with 129 caps. She presented this award together with another top Ghanaian entrepreneur, Founder of the GUBA awards and winner of the African Woman in Europe (AWE) award, Dentaa as well as Founder of the Arthur Wharton Foundation, Shaun Campbell.
