The pick of this weekend round of Premier League matches is the clash on Sunday evening between Everton and Liverpool from Goodison Park. This Merseyside derby sees the return to action of league leaders Liverpool, as they look to move to within touching distance of a first title in 30 years.
“Of course we still have two games [to win until] we can say, ‘Yeah, we are the champions’ but our main focus is to win all the games. That’s the main target,” said Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren.
The Reds turned on the style at Anfield when the teams last met back in December 2019, with goals from Divock Origi (two), Xherdan Shaqiri, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum taking the home side to an emphatic 5-2 victory.
The clash will also give African football fans the chance to see some of the continent’s top players in action, including Mane, Mohamed Salah and Alex Iwobi amongst others.
Elsewhere in the Premier League this weekend, Jose Mourinho will take aim at one of his former teams when Manchester United visit Tottenham Hotspur in London for what could be a thriller on Friday night. Both teams are looking to get themselves back into contention for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, and this head-to-head battle could go a long way in deciding their fate.
The weekend’s action also sees Arsenal away to Brighton & Hove Albion, Watford and West Ham United have key matches on Saturday against Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively in their hopes of avoiding relegation, as do Aston Villa when they host Chelsea on Sunday.
The round will be completed on Monday night when Manchester City welcome Burnley to the Etihad Stadium for a classic clash of styles: the Citizens’ flowing, passing game will come up against the Clarets’ more physical and pragmatic approach – one very much in the image of their grizzled manager Sean Dyche.
