#GhanaGist: New thrilling ride opens at Sun City’s Valley of Waves

There has never been so much excitement in one place! Thrill seekers have another heart stopping ride to experience at Sun City’s Valley of Waves. The breathtaking, 155 metre long slide, has opened just in time for the resort over the festive season.

Almost as tall as a six storey building, the one or two person raft slide starts with a 54 diameter closed section, at 18m elevation above the pool.  Riders are taken through a dark and twisted portion and as the light begins to fill the tube, they are surprised with the feeling of falling into the “boomerang” section. From there they shoot up an almost vertical wall that elevates 12 metres above the pool, reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour in an inflatable raft.

Manufactured by leading US-based water rides manufacturer, WhiteWater, the slide is widely touted as the gold standard for multi-person waterslides. Maximum total weight allowed for a 2-rider raft is 185kg and 136kg for a single rider. There is no minimum age requirement but riders must be at least 45kgs and 1.22 metres in height.

Says Sun City’s Managing Executive, Mike van Vuuren: “Our new slide offers a truly unique and thrilling experience, and it set to become our guests’ favorite group ride. Thrill seekers will love the sharp summits, high-banking turns and heart pounding plunges.”New slide 1

The new slide is part of part of the upgrade of Sun City’s Valley of Waves. In early 2016, another spectacular slide will be installed, bringing the number of exciting slides at the Valley of Waves to seven.

There is a water slide for every comfort level, from easygoing tubing along a gentle stream to semi-submerged waterslides that spiral downhill.  One of the main attractions at Valley of Waves is the Roaring Lagoon – a 6 500 square metre wave pool with hydraulic mechanisms that generate waves of nearly 2 metres high every 90 seconds every half hour. The Lazy River offers a gentle, non-stop tube ride around an island while The Royal Baths swimming pool beside the Amphitheatre offers a place to soak up some warm sun rays, cocktail in hand.

There are also a number of walkways through tropical forests surrounding Valley of Waves where visitors can explore the Spider Web Sway Bridge, hidden cave waterfalls, rare plant varieties and more. The Bridge of Time erupts every hour in an exciting, theatrical display of vibrations, rumbling volcanic sounds and smoke.

The Valley of Waves is open to both resort guests and day visitors from 09h00 to 18h00 daily in summer (September to April) and 10h00 to 17h00 in winter (May to August). Visitors seeking sustenance have access to the new gastro-pub, The Brew Monkey, as well as the new fast food arena with the Food Factory.
