Meet Ghana’s Angelique Kidjo; Sherifa Gunu

Sherifa Gunu is Ghana’s premier music diva, according to Coptic (known in real life as Eric Kwabena “Coptic” Matlock).

The US-based Ghanaian beat making genius who has produced beats for the likes of Notorious BIG, P. Diddy, Jermaine Dupri, Black Rob, Mase. Memphis Bleek, Carl Thomas, Ice Cube and many others, told TotalShowbiz that Sherifa is Ghana’s own Angelique Kidjo, and by our inference Ghana’s premier music diva.

Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo, commonly known as Angélique Kidjo, is a Grammy Award–winning Beninoise singer-songwriter and activist, noted for her diverse musical influences and creative music videos.

Time Magazine has called her “Africa’s premier diva”.

The BBC has included Kidjo in its list of the African continent’s 50 most iconic figures.

The Guardian has listed her as one of their Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World and Kidjo is the first woman to be listed among “The 40 Most Powerful Celebrities In Africa” by Forbes Magazine.

The Daily Telegraph in London describes her as “The undisputed queen of African music” during the 2012 Olympic Games River Of Music Festival.

“I love her music, she is a real star! In a world full of artists, she is a star. Her style and voice are remarkable!” Coptic, giving reasons for his statement.

Coptic however agrees that if Sherifa is put on a proper record label she could do wonders and says that he wishes to get in touch with her to produce some good music.

Sherifa Gunu is described by many as crowd shaker, puller and a real performer when it comes to singing and dancing. She is a princess of the royal family of Dagbon, in the Northern part of Ghana.

She has done a series of collaborations with the late Terry Bonchaka and Ayisoba and just recently Sarkodie.

She has done some backing for artistes like Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede, Daddy Lumba and Nana Acheampong.

She likes to refer to her music as Africana music which is typically known in Africa as juju music and has two albums* to her credit so far.

Sherifa is billed to perform at the Hope City Launch concert which has American superstar Chris Brown as the headline act on 5th of March.
