Rapper and producer E.L was crowned the 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year at the 17th edition of the awards.
Last year’s winner Stonebwoy was one of the musicians highly tipped to retain the crown but he lost it to the “Koko” rapper in a category that comprised Stonebwoy, VVIP, Sarkodie and SP Kofi Sarpong.
Speaking on his inability to retain the crown, award wining Dancehall and Reggae musician, Stonebwoy, born Livingstone Etse Satekla has said that he wasn’t disappointed he lost the crown but he was rather surprised.
“I was not disappointed but I was surprised. Before the show, I told EL in New York that ‘Charley, if I didn’t win, you have to win’…..I got compliments from some of the artistes…it was obvious. Before the awards, it was recognizable…by fellow artistes who said, ‘you do aa…this year you want to win the thing again. If I took myself out of the nominees and I think like a fan, I will be like…‘the guy [referring to himself] has to take this year again,’” he said on Viasat1’s celebrity and lifestyle show, Celebrity Fanzone.
In addition to the Artiste of the Year, E.L won the Hiplife/HipHop Artiste of the Year, Music Producer of the Year, Afro-Pop Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year with Shelele.
