In a bid not to get ‘lost’ when she started her career about five years ago, actress, Nana Akua Addo, believed a weird sense of fashion was what she needed to attract attention in an industry already pregnant with fashionistas.
She hardly dressed to suit the occasion and it was very common to see her at glamorous events sporting ripped pair jeans teamed with extra-long hair extensions, over the top make up among others.
Yes, she got the attention but it was an attraction of insults. She was heavily criticized for her sense of fashion but Nana Akua seemed unfazed.
However, since the past year or so, she seem to have met with a fashion genie who has touched her with a magic wand transforming her sense of style.
She has so changed that she was even adjudged the Best Dressed actress on the red carpet at last year’s Ghana Movies Award. She shared the award with colleagues actress, Selly Galley.
Throwing light on both her old and new sense of fashion, Nana Akua said,” when I came onto the scene, the only thing that could distinguish me from Nadia Buari, Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Nelson among others was the way I dressed.
“Obviously, they were way popular than me so if I didn’t dress in a certain way, how would the cameras recognise my presence,” she told Showbiz in an interview on Monday.
The mother of two revealed that although she wanted attention, she received a lot of insults because of her dress sense.
“Some people called me names that were not pleasant. I felt bad but because I knew what I wanted to achieve, I never allowed it to bother me” she said.
According to her, she, however, could not continue to receive insults for the way she dressed thus had to do something about it and she is very happy she changed her style.
“I am so proud of myself. Look at me now, someone who received loads of insults and being recognized as the best dressed as well as best make up on the red carpet.
I must say I was amazed when my name was mentioned because there were a lot of people who had dressed well on the night,” she said.
Talking about her movie career, Nana Akua known for movies such as Destiny’s Child, Blood, Wanna Be, Rain, Speechless, Never Again and Tears said she is happy about actors becoming producers.
“Ghana used to have only few movie producers but now we have so many with the majority being actors and actresses.
“We have the likes of Prince David Osei, Kobi Rana, Yvonne Okoro, Yvonne Nelson, Nadia Buari, Emelia Brobbey, Nana Ama McBrown just to mention a few,” she added.
Nana Akua has produced two movies—Wannabe and Nkuli. She won Miss Ghana Germany in 2005 and was the second runner up for Miss Maliaka in 2003.
