The only criteria that had to be met was that the women had to have impacted on their community positively by giving back and making sacrifices. In the end, 5 ladies were chosen who played enormous roles in their communities from teaching kids to read and write, to empowering the youth with free workshops to enable them to have a means of income, to running an organization that encourages people to donate blood to women who suffer blood loss during childbirth… their sacrifices were highly impressive for seemingly every day women.
In conversation with one of the winners, Mrs Kehinde Okorafor, she was quick to mention that a large majority of her supporters and people who tend to donate to her empowerment organization, ‘Make me Elegant’ ranged between low income to middle income earners. She mentioned how everyday she was inspired by people who had nothing to give but still gave of themselves tremendously.
It was amazing to see that all the women selected had paid jobs but could still dedicate their time and resources to the benefit of people with whom they had little to no familial relations with.
On arrival to Eko Hotel Signature Suites, the ladies were treated to a wine reception and plates of small chops courtesy of The Barrique House and Magnifique Crystal respectively. After this, they received a make-over courtesy of Itunu Adelakun of @adellahstyling and were treated to an individual photo-shoot. From there, the guests were escorted downstairs to the restaurant where a candle lit dinner was prepared in their stead.
Here, they were treated to a three course meal and a surprise visit from Mrs Folorunso Alakija. She spent the next hour sitting with the ladies and getting to know them better.
But not until she was able to take a few selfies with each winner.
It was indeed a memorable day and for women who gave so much, they were truly deserving!
