Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump’s comments about her being the “co-founder” of ISIS “crazy” during an appearance on Monday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live.
As the late-night show returned from a commercial break, host Jimmy Kimmel joked, “Who would have guessed this audience would be so enthusiastic about the co-founder of ISIS?”
“That was one of the crazier things that has been said in this campaign,” Clinton said. After Kimmel asked if the remarks upset her, she replied, “I don’t get upset any more, because I’d be upset all the time. So I don’t get upset. I think it’s crazy. But then I think, ‘This is like giving aid and comfort to the bad guys.’”
Clinton added that Trump’s rhetoric “actually helps the terrorists.”
“Because they make a case, as they made with this comment: ‘Oh, well, see, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, they created ISIS. We heard this from Donald Trump, who’s running for president. He’s the Republican nominee,’” Clinton said. “So I think it’s crazy, but I think it’s also harmful.”
In a speech earlier this month, Trump said Clinton and President Barack Obama were responsible for ISIS. “He’s the founder of ISIS. He’s the founder of ISIS. He’s the founder. He founded ISIS,” Trump said. “I would say the co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton.”
In an interview following the remarks, Trump doubled down on the ISIS comments. “I meant he’s the founder of ISIS. I do. He was the most valuable player. I give him the most valuable player award. I give her, too, by the way, Hillary Clinton.”
Despite the many times he stood by the ISIS slam, Trump later tweeted he was just being sarcastic. “Ratings challenged CNN reports so seriously that I call President Obama (and Clinton) ‘the founder’ of ISIS, & MVP. THEY DON’T GET SARCASM?”
