GhanaGist Star Of The Week: Challenge Was Psychological – Comedian DKB

Comedy in recent times has taken rise in the entertainment industry in Africa. It’s one trade that has employed young men who decided to use their lifestyle to earn a living.

If you have a comedian friend then you will definitely understand me. Unlike other professions, they live the lives of their career even when off stage and camera.

The 3rd September born, Derek Kobina Bonney popularly known with his abbreviates, DKB is our GhanaGist Star of the Week. The Ghana’s most popular Big Brother Africa rep is doing best with his comedy career.

He started his career with the likes of Foster Romanus and David Oscar at the University of Ghana, Legon. Last year, he was featured as a comedy performer on the Corporate Comedy Series tour hosted by David Oscar and other supporting comedians.

DKB has managed to walk through the education system from the Universal Academy to St. Anthony’s Preparatory School and a product of St. John Grammar School. With his background in Agricultural Studies he moved to the University of Ghana where he graduated with a Bsc. Agric Hons.

Like every passionate talent, he decided not to go with Agric but took the risk to achieve his comedy dream career.

In my interview with GhanaGist.Com, he said “This career was a huge challenge. The challenge was enormous .It wasn’t really based on resources and risk but the mentality. The mentality was that any comedian from Ghana is not funny. So it took the Night Of 1018 Laughs organized by Charterhouse for me to prove that Ghanaian comedians can be very funny”.

No doubt he is now competing with the Nigerian and other African comedians across the globe. And you will agree with me that he is undoubtedly the best comedian in Ghana currently and that has earned him the crown title by the father of Comedy in Ghana, Kwaku Sintim Misa (KSM) as The New King Of Comedy.

The King DKB is signed and managed under Ecstasy Entertainment and he affirms that he scripts his stage performance before going for a billed show. He deems he can’t get on stage without planned content.

He is one comedian who draws inspiration from Bill Cosby. With the love for his work and passion drive, he believes not to quit comedy anytime soon because even Bill Cosby is still active in comedy after 60years.

If you have attended any DKB show and can’t wait for his next show, I have good news for you. The #DKBComedy Tour will be starting off in October. The tour will be held in the tertiary universities across the country.

Takoradi Polytechnic will witness the best rib cracking comedy stage in October while the University of Ghana, Legon and Central University will have their share of DKB in November and December respectively.
