#DumsorMustStop: Yvonne Nelson Replies NDC Man ‘I’m Not Akufo-Addo’s Hatchet Girl’

Yvonne Nelson has dismissed assertions that suggest she is doing the hatchet job of the opposition New Patriotic Party.

Stephen Atubiga, whose Supreme Court infamy – being hauled before the court for making contemptuous comments during the hearing of the 2012 election petition and getting jailed for it – propelled him to fame, and other strong members of the governing NDC have taken to social media sites to accuse the actress and her fellow celebrities onboard the #dumsormuststop vigil bandwagon, of doing the “dirty work” for NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP.

But the actress insists she is fronting the anti-power outage campaign as a “voice for the voiceless”.

According to her, she does not think it is “wise” for celebrities to openly declare their support for a political party.

“I believe everyone has their right and everyone can do what they please. But I don’t think it is the smartest thing as an actor, as a musician. I don’t think it’s the smartest thing. But if you choose to come out, well that’s you. That’s your decision. But for me, I would rather just be a voice for my people” she told Accra-based Adom FM.

Speaking on Ultimate 106.9FM in Kumasi, the actress said affiliation to any political party would “compromise” her position.

According to her, she would continue to press on the President to fix the power crisis until the ‘dumsor’ problem is completely solved.

“We have a leader, if he cares about his people, he should do something about it. He is a leader; he needs to deliver, he has the power to decide what’s good for the country… All of us are Ghanaians. We just need a better Ghana,” she told Naa Kordeyon the Ultimate brunch Wednesday morning.

“People are saying the campaign is political, they need to know #dumsormuststop is not a political campaign.”

Asked if she would welcome the president at the vigil should he attend as rumours suggest, Nelson said: “Why not? He is a citizen of Ghana and everyone is invited. But he is the one who has to solve this problem and it would be really cool to have him join us to answer some of these questions”.
