The 9th edition of Spelling Bee competition and the first round of the community Spelling Bee has been launched in Accra by the Young Educators Foundation with DStv and other partners. The competition is organized by to help improve the spelling abilities of school children and also equip their teachers with the various approaches to teaching the English Language.
The Theme this Year is “ “Unearthing our Speller-brities” and an estimated 200 schools are expected to participate in the competition.
DStv Ghana is once again sponsoring the group with the training of students from schools situated in and around the Airport Residential. The community level Bee was held on Friday the 2nd of October 2015 at the St Johns Grammar School, 30 students have been selected to represented the Airport at the Regional Bee which is to be held at a later date.
The winner of this year’s competition will win a trip to the USA to participate in the Scripps National Spelling as Ghana’s representative. All participating spellers will receive souvenirs from their sponsors, including DStv.
During the launch, the Country Director of YEF, Eugenia Tachie-Menson expressed the need for teachers to be knowledgeable about the current teaching and learning techniques to enable the children improve their grade. “We appreciate the support of all our sponsors especially those who have been with us over the years, we appeal to the Ghana Education Service to help incorporate co-curricular activities like English Clubs into our students’ academic schedules. These we believe will help make them well rounded in all aspects of both their academic and social life. ”She also mentioned that the competition is currently running in Nigeria will soon be launched in Namibia and Kenya.
Present at the event was representatives from the Ghana Education Service, Indomie Instant Noodles (headline sponsors), Alliance Francaise, Voltic Ghana and other supporters.
The sponsorship from DStv will cover registration, training and studying, vocabulary testing and oral spelling and provision of learning materials for students from schools in the Airport area who interested in taking part.
Reading a short address on behalf of the General Manager, Pamela Takyiwaa said “As a business organization MultiChoice is invested in the educational and social development of the environment it finds itself. This is evident in its annual DStv Eutelsat Essay and Poster Competition which is an ongoing partnership between MultiChoice Africa and Eutelsat, a pan-African collaboration that creates meaningful engagement with students, the academic community and the scientific world. The essay and poster competition, which is still open, invites students between the ages of 14-19 to submit entries and this year learners are asked to write an essay or design a poster on how satellites have helped us better understand and take care of our planet”.
The overall essay and poster winner will each win a once-of-a-lifetime trip for two to the Eutelsat facilities in Paris while the runners up in both categories will tour MultiChoice in South Africa and visit the South African National Space Agency at Hartebeeshoek.
