CITI FM is 9 years

Adabraka-based radio station, CITI FM, is nine years today. In what started as a fresh addition to urban radio some nine years ago, 97.3 has grown to become a must-listened-to dial.

On this day nine years ago, Accra woke up to a new and fresh injection to mainstream radio. Since then, the station has morphed from being just any other media house into one that is at the very core – influential.

An English-speaking radio station that is refreshingly different, the station has over the years produced some of the finest brains in radio broadcasting. An arrival that dazed already established formats at the time (and still does), CITI FM has managed to stand tall, a year into their decade in business.

Some of the names that opened up the competition on mainstream radio and ensured the station took off on a solid footing include Paul Adom Okyere, Saint Doe Tamakloe, Clement Kofi Akapalm, Bernard Avle, Richard Sky, Fred Chidi (who is now with Kesmi FM in Tamale), Kwame Gyan, Richard Mensah, Benny Fiifi Ashun, Samuel Bartels, Ebenezer Amankwah, Odelia Ofori, Jessica Opare Saforo, Sammy Forson, and Zelda Kporku (now Zelda Adjei Darko). Others include Patrick Ayumu, Moro Awudu and Farida Khaillan, all three of whom have since joined Radio XYZ.

In the last nine years, it’s been noted to be a listener-focused medium with innovative on-air programs, promotions, outdoor events and comprehensive news. The station has become known as a strong advocate for consumer issues, including road safety, sanitation, education, good health care, security and so on.

Citi 97.3 FM covers the vibrant Ghanaian political scene with objective and balanced live reports, news features and documentaries as well as regular round-table discussions on pertinent issues.

The station is also noted for events like the Citi Business Olympics, Decemba2Rememba, the Money Fair, MOGO, Management Development Month, and Heritage Month Series.

In 2012, the station was recognised as the most Innovative Newsroom in Africa for its use of digital media including online, social and mobile media in its news gathering and dissemination process at the 16th Telkom Highway Africa Awards.

Recognized by the BBC in 2007 as new radio station of the year and the Citi Breakfast Show awarded the talk/interactive show of the year in the same year, the station’s products have also won numerous awards.
